Squirrel River

Squirrel River in the Baird Mountains

The Squirrel River is a right tributary of the Kobuk River in western Alaska.

Its source is located on the southern flank of the Baird Mountains, a mountain range of the Brooks Range, between Noatak National Preserve and Kobuk Valley National Park. It flows in a southeasterly direction and empties into the Kobuk at Kiana River, which flows over the Kotzebue Sound on the Chukchi Sea, a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean.

The river's name comes either back to " Sikrikpak ," the term Alaska Native, hoary marmot for, or on " Sikrik ", the name for a type of ground squirrel rights. 1884 Lieutenant Cantwell listed by the United States Revenue Cutter Service the name " Sheeleelicktok " and a year later " Shee - gar- rik - puk " and " Shee -lee -lie - tok ". From Lieutenant Stoney by the United States Navy in 1900, the denomination " Shu- shuk -to -ark " documented.
