Srbobran

Srbobran ( kyr. Србобран, Hungarian Szenttamás, German Thomas Berg) is a municipality and town in the district Južna Bačka in the autonomous province of Vojvodina in Serbia. The municipality has 17,855 inhabitants (2002) and covers an area of ​​284 km ². The community is made up of three districts, the city and the places Srbobran Turija and Nadalj.

Geography

Srbobran lies in the region of Bačka. The municipality is located quite centrally in Vojvodina. The surrounding area is largely flat terrain. The place is located at Backa Canal. There is moderate continental climate, which the agricultural economy benefits. The soil of the region is considered to be very fruitful. Srbobran also has several untapped thermal springs. It further gas and oil deposits were discovered, which are also exploited.

Etymology

The Serbian name Srbobran might be translated as Serbs or Serb defense shield in about. The Hungarian name Szenttamás (Eng. St. Thomas ) refers to the former name of the village from the 14th century, which was dedicated to St. Thomas after its foundation.

Population

According to the 2002 census, 17,855 people live in the community Srbobran. Serbs form with 11,963 (67%), the absolute majority in the community, followed by Hungary with 3,920 (22 %). There are also other minorities, which account for about 11% of the population, including 20 German people.

History

The oldest mention Srbobrans has been arrested in 1338 under the name Szenttamás. In addition to these names the place was known by other names, including Srbograd ( German Serbs city; mention about 1751 ). The present name Srbobran got the place in 1918, leading to the events of the revolutionary year of 1848/49, when the Serbs, the Serbian Vojvodina proclaimed and Szenttamás strong fortifications against the Hungarian army erected where then held one of the biggest battles between the Serbian and Hungarian Army. The battle won the Hungarian army, but were previously on imperial command, the Serb forces who were members of the Military Frontier, disconnected and reconnected reintegrated into the Military Frontier, which the Serbian army in Vojvodina by a good half were smaller.
