The Constitution was one of two ships of MARCOM - type P3 -S2 - DL2. She was slightly taller than her sister ship Independence ( 23 719 GRT) with 23,754 GRT. The ships were built by Bethlehem Steel in Quincy (Massachusetts ) in the United States. The shipping company American Export Lines put it in scheduled service between New York and Genoa and Naples in Italy. In 1959, the ship was rebuilt. From 1968 it was used temporarily for cruises before it was launched in Jacksonville in September 1969.

In 1974 the ship was sold to the Atlantic Far East Line and renamed Oceanic Constitution. In 1981 it was sold to American Hawaiian Cruises and renamed back to Constitution. The ship was now being used after a new conversion for cruises to Hawaii. In July 1995, the ship that did not meet the SOLAS regulations, was launched in Portland and sold to Chinese terminators 1997. On the trip to the scrap yard it sank on 17 November 1997 north of Hawaii.

  • The ship was the location for the U.S. sitcom I Love Lucy, the feature film The great love of my life.

And the episode The Nightmare ship ( in the original All thieves on deck ) of the television series Magnum, in which the Constitution can be seen also in some outdoor shots.
