The Monterey was an American passenger ship.

History

The ship was built in 1931. The launch took place on 10 October 1931 the ship to the Matson Navigation Co in San Francisco was delivered and deployed starting in June of the year for cruises from San Francisco to Honolulu and Sydney on 20 April 1932.

From December 1941, the ship was used as a troop transport for the U.S. Army. After the Second World War the ship from 1946 should be converted to a passenger ship. The conversion was stopped in 1947 and the ship first launched. From April 1956 to May 1957, the ship was finally rebuilt in Newport News and then as Matsonia used between San Francisco and Los Angeles and Honolulu.

In June 1970, the ship was sold to Ajax Navigation Co in Piraeus and used for a conversion as Britanis between the United Kingdom and Australia. In May 1982, the ship went to Fantasy Cruises, who used it for Bermuda cruises. For a long time the Britanis the longest cruise ship in the world.

1994 chartered the Military Sealift Command the ship in order to use it in the Guantanamo Bay as a shelter for refugees. From the end of October 1995, the ship in Tampa was on.

In January 1998 the ship was sold to a new owner and renamed Belofin -1. Plans to use the ship in San Francisco as a hotel ship were abandoned. In September 2000 the ship by the Ukrainian tug Iribis to India was towed for demolition. On the way the ship on October 21, 2000 fell away about 50 nautical miles from Cape Town.
