St Andrews

St Andrews is a small town on the east coast of Scotland ( Fife ), which was chosen in 1620 to the royal city. It is famous for its traditional university and as the home of golf. It is also a worthwhile destination for tourists with its picturesque location on the North Sea. St Andrews had 16,695 inhabitants, of whom one third were students of the University in 2006.

History

The town goes back to an early Christian Celtic settlement back (around the 8th century ). Around this time, the relics of the Apostle Andrew were brought to this place probably. 908 St Andrews became a bishop. To him, the St. Andrew's Cross of the Scottish flag relates. The cathedral was begun in 1160 and completed in 1326. During the Reformation, it was destroyed by followers of John Knox. Education

The University of St Andrews, founded in 1413, is the oldest university in Scotland and third oldest in Britain. Golf

The seaside town of St Andrews is regarded as the home of golf ( " Home of Golf" ), which term also for the actual golf course that is St Andrews Links used. 1754 the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews one of the first golf club established here at all. His famous club home is on the Old Course, probably the most famous golf course in the world. In the British Golf Museum, the history of the golf game is considered by the beginnings. Golf tourism is now one of the main sources of income of the city.
