St. Elizabeth's flood (1404)

On November 19, 1404, the first Elisabeth flood hit the coast of the Netherlands in the provinces of Flanders and Zeeland, but also the province of Holland was affected. In Flanders, approximately 3,000 hectares of land were washed away. Many polder areas south of the Westerschelde, which were diked by 1374, went again lost to the sea.

The cities IJzendijke and Hugevliet were swallowed up by the floods. Even a storm surge of 1374 had left considerable damage. IJzendijke was later established elsewhere again.
