EHC Basel (since 2002)

The St. Jakob-Arena is an indoor ice rink in Basel and homestead of the EHC Basel.

Location

The St. Jakob-Arena is located in the Brüglinger level and is part of the sports center St. Jacob, which also houses the largest football stadium in Switzerland, St. Jakob- Park, and St. James Hall. The Arena is located on the bottom of the municipality of Munich stone, but is in close proximity to Basel. The ice rink is connected by good transport: the tram line 14 of the Basel traffic (BVB ) connects the area with the city center, the bus line 36 with the German railway station.

Use

The stadium has a capacity of 6,600 spectators. This capacity is divided into 4,200 seats and 2,400 standing places.

The arena is available all year round and is suitable for most ice sports such as ice hockey, figure skating, ice dancing, synchronized skating, short track speed skating and ice skating. Only during the second half of the month of June and throughout July, the hall is free of ice.

History

Since 1980 there were in Basel, the idea of a new ice rink. The Basel Representatives John Randegger, the ehememalige hockey player Pio Parolini and the Basel Councillor Christoph Stutz founded in 1998 a private group with the aim of finally moving the project forward. In 1999, the Cooperative St. Jakob-Arena was launched, which invested approximately CHF 1.2 million in the construction. Other investors included the covenant with two million, the cantons and municipalities with a total 8.2 million and the Industrielle Werke Basel 4.5 million Swiss francs. The remaining capital was debt-financed. During the construction phase 2001-2002 119,000 m³ were used. With the planning and execution of the architects Zwimpfer Partner and Berrel were looked after. The first hockey game in the arena on 12 October 2002, the EHC Basel defeated the EHC Olten to sold-out ranks 4-0. 2006 the Curling Championship 2006 in Basel at the St. Jakob-Arena.
