St. Mary's Abbey, Fulda

The Benedictine abbey church of St Mary is a 1626 founded the monastery of the Benedictine nuns in the town center of Fulda. The sisters operate various craft workshops, a monastery and a convent garden shop and create a compost activator.

Popularly called "Nuns Church " - - Built in the years 1629-1631 the monastery church was built in the shapes of late Gothic and Renaissance, and has a distinctive west facade, which is framed by large pointed arch windows and a Renaissance gable.

History

The foundation stone for the construction of the church and monastery of the Benedictine nuns was made by the Prince-Abbot of Fulda Bernhard Johann Schenck to pig Berg ( 1623-1632 ). The first decades were marked by great difficulties because of the Thirty Years' War; the sisters had to repeatedly escape from enemy troops, the monastery was plundered several times.

The secularization was the monastery in 1802 by taking over a girl's school missed. During the Kulturkampf, the sisters went from 1875 to 1887 into exile in France. 1898, the monastery was raised to the abbey. 1942 could be prevented the expulsion of the sisters by placing a portion of the building of the armed forces has been made available.

After a long period of rapprochement with the Beuronese Congregation, the abbey was finally taken in 1982 in the Congregation.
