St. Mary's Church, Reutlingen

St. Mary's Church is one of the landmarks of Reutlingen. It was built in 1247-1343 and is now considered one of the most beautiful and important monuments of Gothic architecture in Württemberg.

History

The opportunity to build the church, according to tradition, was the siege of Reutlingen in 1247th When the enemy army of supporters of Landgraf Heinrich Raspe was at the gates of Reutlingen, praised the citizens of the Virgin Mary to build a chapel, the army should remove. When this actually happened, the enemy left behind a battering ram. According to the dimensions of this " Reutlinger battering ram " should then be laid down the length of the church nave. The battering ram itself was removed later at the request of Emperor Maximilian II of the nave, but not through the main entrance because the opposite houses are too close and the 36.5 m long war equipment was not right around the corner. Therefore had to be taken on the east side of the wall pieces, in order to create a sufficiently large opening.

On the 71 m high west tower shines a gilded angel of 1343rd The angel consists of a 1.40 m high copper hollow body and has only one wing, so as to rotate with the wind. When city fire in 1726 St. Mary's Church was badly damaged; the internal equipment was lost until the late Gothic Holy grave and the baptismal font of 1499th Between 1893 and 1901 the church was restored in neo-Gothic style.

St. Mary's Church was between 1520s and 1540s, the site of action of the " Swabian Reformer " Matthew Alber, who spread from here the teachings of Martin Luther's Reformation in Reutlingen and the southwest of Germany. Since then, the Marienkirche is up to the present center of the Protestant community of Reutlingen.

Since 1988, the St. Mary's Church is a national cultural monument.
