St. Saviour Cathedral, Cayenne

The Saint- Sauveur Cathedral is the main church of the city of Cayenne and the largest church in the French overseas department of French Guiana. History

In 1823, summarized the priest Guillermo Nicolas and Pierre Bernard Milius, French governor of Guiana, to replace the church Saint -Nicolas by a new building. Work on the new Saviour Church, which was hoisted in carved stone and masonry, began in 1825 and lasted until 1833. From this period also the two -story wooden steeple. The altar, the pulpit and the confessional of the chapel of the prison on the islet la Mère 1876 were transferred here.

1933, the church was raised to cathedral, consecrated by Pierre -Marie Gourtay, the first Bishop of Cayenne, took place on November 9, 1934.

In the years 1952/54, the church was completed under the direction of civil engineer Victor Toubi on its east side and reinforced with a polygon made ​​of reinforced concrete. The windows, the floor, the pews and the ceiling have been replaced even.
