St. Urban Tower

The Urban Tower ( Slovak: Urbanova veža ) served as a belfry of the St. Elisabeth Cathedral in Košice ( German: Kassa ).

History

The bell tower created by the reconstruction of the original Gothic tower in the 14th century. 1628 the tower by the architect Martin Lindtner was rebuilt in Renaissance style. 1775 has been rebuilt into a Baroque onion dome the pyramid roof. The tower was destroyed by fire three times and has been reconstructed several times.

Beginning of the 19th century the roof was crowned with a roof in the Empire style and small shops were grown. In the years 1911-1912, 1943-1944 and in 1947 was built the tower an arcade. In the outer wall you put a 36 grave stones from the 14th to the 17th century. 1966, the tower was damaged by fire and destroyed the bells and the roof. 1967 to 1971 the tower was reconstructed. The tower itself is a listed building since 1963. Along with the St. Elizabeth's Cathedral and of Michael's church, the Urban Tower was declared a National Monument in 1970 in Slovakia.

Urban- bell

The tower was the Urban- bell, which had been the Urban I, the patron saint of winemakers dedicated. This five -ton bell was cast in 1557 by the bell founder Franciscus Illenfeld. In 1966 she was destroyed by fire. The original has been reconstructed and is now before the House Tower. In 1996, one a copy of the bell in the tower one. Installed in 1998 to a chime designed by the academic sculptor P. Sceranka.
