The Red Earth Stadium in Dortmund, formerly arena called Red Earth, was built in 1926 at the Strobelallee, located right next to the East Stand of the Signal Iduna Park ( the former Westphalia Stadium ) and in close proximity to the Westfalenhalle.

History

The construction of the stadium 1924-1926 was mainly carried out by unemployed through emergency work. The stadium was opened with two events: On June 6, 1926, the civil athletes opened the arena, a week later a meeting of the working -Turner took place.

On September 4, 1927, the German Catholic Congress was held in the stadium and in the adjacent Westfalenhalle. This event was organized by the Apostolic Nuncio of the Pope in Germany, Eugenio Pacelli, who later became Pope Pius XII. Pope was headed.

In 1929, the quarter-final match at the German soccer championship 1928/29 match between FC Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC was played in the stadium. The Hertha Berlin won the game 4-1 gates.

1932 was the arena venue for the meeting of the Reich German Youth power and Reichskriegertag.

After its opening, it was from 1937 until the opening of the Westphalia Stadium the home of Borussia Dortmund. In the meantime ordered the " arena " in the 1960s due to an addition built wooden grandstand with a capacity of 42,000 spectators. In the attacks on the Dortmund stadium was previously damaged during the Second World War. In the 1950s, the Red Earth Stadium was more than once the venue for boxing matches. Between 1950 and 1955 here 6 boxing matches with more than 200,000 viewers took place. In 1990 the stadium was Red Earth venue of the German Gymnastics Festival.

Today it is an athletics stadium with a capacity of 25,000 spectators, including 3,000 covered seats and 7,000 standing places. It serves the Dortmund clubs such as LG Olympia Dortmund, Dortmund LAC, LC Rapid Dortmund and TuS Westfalia Hombruch as a training and competition venue. Furthermore, it is used as a venue for the second men's team of Borussia Dortmund, where it is approved for 10,000 spectators, of which 3,000 seats and 7,000 standing places are.

The stadium is registered as a historic landmark in the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund. In December 2008, a major renovation of the stadium was completed after 14 months of construction. For 1.65 million euros a concrete and fire restoration was carried out.

In the season 2009/10, as the second team of Borussia Dortmund played in the 3rd league, the Red Earth Stadium served as the home ground of the team, although it is not the requirements of the German Football Association requirements. The floodlights of the stadium gives only a light intensity of 586 lux, the regulations for the 3rd league but see a light intensity of 800 lux before.
