Stags Leap District AVA

Stags Leap District AVA ( recognized since 27 January 1989) is an American Viticultural Area in the U.S. state of California and is part of the regional Napa Valley AVA. The area is located about 10 km north of the city of Napa. The name " Stag's Leap " means " deer leap" and goes back to a legend of the earlier native to the Napa Valley Wappo Indians. From a rocky hill in the middle of the valley a deer had escaped his hunters by a bold leap. Petroglyphs of deer from ancient times are still to be found. The Stags Leap District was the first appellation in California, which was created solely on the basis of a specific soil and thus corresponded to the concept of terroir. The soils originated here 10 million years ago and consists of both clay and clay, which was flooded by the nearby Napa River, as well as by eroded volcanic rock of the Vaca Mountains.

Stags Leap District is famous for varietal wines of Cabernet Sauvignon.
