Stahl House

The Steel House (also Case Study House No. 22), named after the owner, is a modern building in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles.

Pierre Koenig designed the house for the former American football player CH " Buck " Stahl 1959. The client, of the land acquired in 1954, had worked before the encounter with King of models for his house, which provided extensive glazing. The house took as built in the previous year Bailey House (No. 21) on the Case Study Houses program of the magazine Arts & Architecture for experimental residential house architecture in part, the June 1960 edition presented the building to the public. Started in 1959 the construction work had after Buck steel prepared the grounds with terraces over several years for construction. After nine months of construction was completed in June 1960. Koenig tried to show the house that industrial materials such as steel are suitable for housing.

The L-shaped building is built on a hillside, which was previously considered unbebaubar. The southern wing of the building is fully glazed from floor to steel roof and thus offers from all rooms views of the city. The original simple glazing broke easily and was later replaced with shatterproof glass. The running around the living room balcony without railings is also a later change the design.
