Stan Greig

Stan Greig (* as Stanley Mackay Greig on August 12, 1930 in Joppa, near Edinburgh, † November 18, 2012 ) was a Scottish jazz musician (piano, the drums ) and bandleader.

Life and work

Greig is the son of a piano maker and tuner's. With Al Fairweather and his school friend Sandy Brown in 1945, he played in high school; later, they had a common bond in Edinburgh, with whom she also appeared in London in 1953. 1954 Greig finally moved to London and was a member of the Ken Colyer Jazzmen as a drummer with whom he also appeared in Germany. In 1955, he first worked with Humphrey Lyttelton, then with Bruce Turner ( as a pianist ). In the late 1950s, he worked again with Lyttelton, again in Al Fair Weathers and Sandy Browns All Star Band (1958 /59), in the 1960s, but mostly with arable bilks Paramount Jazz band of 1960 until 1968. 1960 he acted as drummer with Alexis Korner the bluesmen Memphis Slim ( Blue this Evening ).

After 1969, the piano was Greig's main instrument; he led his own small formations, playing mainly boogie woogie and blues piano. He accompanied the early 1970s, Dave Shepherd and Johnny Hawksworth; then he founded in 1975 the London Jazz Big Band, which existed until 1985 and appeared in the 100 Club. From 1977 to 1980 he played with George Melly, then went to 1980/82 as a leader in Europe on tour. He worked from 1985 to 1995 again with Lyttleton together (this time as a pianist ), and in the 1990s with Wally Fawkes. With its Stan Greig Trio he played ( occasionally with drummer Charlie Watts ) mainly in and around London. Also, worked with Keith Smith, Benny Waters / Freddy Randall band and Art Hodes Blue Five & Six (1987). In the 1990s, Greig led his own Harlem Blues and Jazz Band, with whom he also toured on the continent. In 2000 he played in the band of Laurie Chescoe ( Now We Are Ten), 2002 Acker Bilk. Because of Parkinson's disease and could not occur in the last few years.
