Stanislav Hurenko

Stanislaw Iwanowytsch Gurenko (Ukrainian Станіслав Іванович Гуренко; * May 30, 1936 in Ilowajsk, Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, † April 14, 2013 ) was a Soviet and Ukrainian politicians.

Gurenko studied engineering at the Technical University in Kiev, later he worked, first as chief engineer, then as Director of Operations, in an engineering plant in Donetsk. From 1976 he was a member of the party leadership of the Donetsk Oblast, and from 1980 he was a member of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR. Gurenko in 1987 secretary of the party leadership of the Communist Party of Ukraine and was elected in 1989 in the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and in March 1990 in the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR.

In June 1990, he was appointed as successor by Volodymyr Ivashko First Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine. Since July 1990, he was also a member of the Politburo of the CPSU.

Gurenko spoke out as KP Chair on the one for the "national sovereignty" of Ukraine, as well as a " spiritual rebirth " of the country, on the other hand he wanted to prevent a secession from the Soviet Union. The August coup in 1991 led to the exit but then the Ukrainian SSR of the USSR and to temporarily ban the Communist Party. With the founding of the KPU in October 1992 Gurenko took the post of first secretary, party chairman was Petro Symonenko. From 1998 to 2006 Gurenko was as representative of the KPU again in the Ukrainian Parliament.

Gurenko won awards including the Order of the October Revolution and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
