Starachowice

Starachowice ( in the years 1939-1949 Starachowice - Wierzbnik ) is a town in Poland, in the Province of the Holy Cross. It is the seat of the powiat Starachowicki.

History

The city was founded in 1939 by the merger of the industrial patch Starachowice and the city Wierzbnik, the latter had received city rights in the 17th century. By the end of the 1980s Starachowice was an important industrial city in which passed the truck plants star with almost 17,000 workers, foundries, a components factory and enterprises of the timber processing industry. Today, the city is struggling with high unemployment as a result of the increasing disappearance of heavy industry.

Attractions

  • The Trinity church from the 17th century was heavily remodeled in the late 19th century.
  • Old cabin with outbuildings from the second half of the 19th century. Now here, the natural history and art museum of 'Jan Pazdur ' is located. Beside the cottage and the blast furnace a paleontological exhibition and a hall with vehicles from the company 'Star ' can be visited.
  • Ruin of old metal factory in the suburbs Michałów from the first half of the 19th century.
  • Around Starachowice there are vast forests ( partially protected landscape areas ) with marked trails as well as some lakes.
  • Through the middle of the city runs a rocky promontory 400 meters in length and a height of up to ten meters.
