Staraya Ladoga

Staraya Ladoga (Russian Старая Ладога; translated Old Ladoga ) is a village in the Leningrad Oblast in Russia. It had to 1703 city rights, and is one of the oldest Russian cities.

Geography

Staraya Ladoga is situated about 15 kilometers south of the mouth of the Volkhov into Lake Ladoga.

It belongs to Rajon Wolchowski, lies just 10 kilometers north of the center of the Volkhov and is the seat of the rural community ( selskoje posselenije ) Staroladoschskoje, which includes 16 other villages. The total population of the municipality is 2573 (as of October 14, 2010 ).

History

Ladoga (Russian Ладога ) was one of the major trading ports of northern Europe 750-950 AD The oldest coin found in Europe in the Arab Middle Ages, which dated to the year 786, was found here.

The oldest traces of settlement suggest a Scandinavian culture of the indigenous population ( Finno - Ugric ) back.
