Staré Hory Mountains

The Starohorské Hills are named after the town Staré Hory mountain range in central Slovakia, northeast of the city of Banská Bystrica. They are part of the Fatra - Tatra region of the Inner Western Carpathians. In the past, the region was considered to be the most western part of the Low Tatras, however, considered according to a recent geomorphological classification as an independent mountain.

The boundaries of the mountains

  • In the north of the Great Fatra
  • In the east of the Low Tatras,
  • In the south from the valley of Zvolenska kotlina
  • In the west of the Kremnitz mountains.

The main ridge of about 20 km long and 10 km wide mountain passes in the southwest of rising to the northeast. There are connections to the crests of the Great Fatra ( over the pass Saddleback Donovaly ) and the Low Tatras ( over the saddle Hiadeľské saddleback ). The highest peak is the Kozi chrbát 1330 m.

The mountain range consists mainly of crystalline rocks. The earlier especially on mining (especially copper) imprinted region lives mainly from tourism and forestry.

A part of the mountain is part of the Low Tatras National Park.
