The Statute of Lithuania had three editors:. 1529, 1566 and 1588 all were not written in Lithuanian, which at that time still had no full-fledged status as a written language, but in the so-called Ruthenian, an Eastern Slavic language that was in use as a written language in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The Statute of Lithuania was in its time a modern legal work and a collection of customary law in the former Eastern Europe in the sixteenth century.
