Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst
The Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Art ( official abbreviation SMAK ) is a Belgian Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent. Opened in 1999, the museum is housed in a 1949 built casino on the Citadelpark, which was converted into a museum.
History
The origin of the museum is located in 1957 founded by Karel Geirlandt Ghent Kunstverein Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse art. The founding purpose of the association was to support the Ghent Museum of Fine Arts Museum voor Schone Kunsten in terms of a circle of friends to show through acquisitions and direct support in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten contemporary art can. 1975 this led to the creation of the Museum voor Hedendaagse Arts Ghent, which remained, however, without its own premises. The Museum voor Hedendaagse art showed the works from the collection of the Vereniging and smaller temporary exhibitions in the rooms of the Museum voor Schone Kunsten. Jan Hoet was the founding director of the Museum voor Hedendaagse art and director of the Museum to the overpass in the 1999 opened SMAK
The S.M.A.K. 1999 received its own building in Citadelpark, directly across from the Museum voor Schone Kunsten. Jan Hoet led the House until 2003 and was then replaced by the American Peter Doroshenko, who had to leave after only one year. Today, the Museum of Philippe van Cauteren as an artistic and Philippe Vandenweghe is passed as ampersand director.
Museum and Collection
The museum's collection focuses on art since 1945 and has its origins in the collection of the Museum voor Hedendaagse Arts Ghent. Especially the directions Pop Art, Minimalism, Conceptual Art and Arte Povera are represented, including works by international artists such as Joseph Beuys ( economic values ), David Hammons (Great Aeromodeller ), Thomas Schütte, Juan Muñoz and members of the CoBrA group. A special focus is naturally on the works of Belgian artists like Panamarenko, Marcel Broodthaers ( Miroir d' epoque regency ), Thierry De Cordier and Luc Tuymans.
