Stefan Persson (ice hockey)

Stefan E. Persson ( born December 22, 1954 in Umeå ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player (defender) who played from 1977 to 1986 for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League.

Career

After playing in Sweden Piteå IF and Brynäs IF, he finished at the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1977 with the Swedish national ice hockey team in second place.

Already at the NHL Amateur Draft 1974, the New York Islanders had in the 14th round secured the rights to him. For the season 1977/78 he moved to the Islanders and sat through the first time. He and Anders Kallur 1979 were the first Europeans who could win the Stanley Cup. In the following three years, he took with the then outstanding Islanders the Cup. Until the 1985/86 season he remained with the Islanders. He then played a few more years in the third-tier Swedish Division 1 at Borås HC.

Later, he served as General Manager of the Swedish Junior National Team.
