Stephanus Jacobus du Toit

Reverend Stephanus Jacobus du Toit (* 1847, † 1911) was a pioneer in the recognition of Afrikaans as a separate language. He was the leader and founding member of Genootskap van Excited African, by fusion with the Boers Zuidafrikaansche Beschermings Vereeniging (South African Association for the Protection of the Boer ) was to become the Afrikaner Bond later.

S. J. du Toit was the editor of the first published in Afrikaans magazine, Die Afrikaanse Patriot, and lived from 1889 to 1904 in Patriotsgebouw in Hoofstraat of Paarl, where the print shop and a bookstore were located.

His son Jakob Daniël du Toit was also a pioneer of Afrikaans. As an author he was known by his nickname Totius.
