Stephen Conway

Stephen David Conway ( born December 22, 1957) is a British Anglican theologian. He is since 2011 the Bishop of Ely in the Church of England.

Life

Conway grew up in a multi - cultural environment in South London. As a child, he attended the lessons in a Methodist Sunday school. He then went to the Archbishop Tenison 's Church of England Grammar School in the London Borough London Borough of Lambeth. He studied Modern History at Keble College, University of Oxford, and later theology at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge. He was the first family member who holds a masters degree. During his undergraduate studies he was accepted as a student of theology. However, after completing his studies, he first worked as a teacher; He taught history and English at Glenalmond College in Scotland, an Anglican Public School. To prepare for the priesthood, he studied theology at Westcott House Theological College in Cambridge. He completed an internship in the psychiatric emergency room of Fulbourn Hospital; this experience influenced his interest in the medical field of mental- emotional health.

In 1986 he was ordained a deacon; In 1987 he was ordained priest. His priestly career began from 1986 to 1989 as a vicar ( Curate ) on the St Mary Church in Heworth, Tyne and Wear, in the diocese of Durham. He followed from 1989 to 1990 a further curacy at St Michael Church ( with responsibility for St Hilda Church) in Bishop Wearmouth. From 1990 to 1994 he served as "Director of Ordinands " for the training of candidates for the priesthood in the diocese of Durham; at the same time he was honorary vicar ( Honorary Curate ) on the St Margaret Church in Durham. He is representative of the Church of England in the L'Arche community in the UK, a charity which supports people with learning disabilities, including by arranging accommodation and award of financial aid. He is also Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Council of Westcott House Theological College.

Conway is unmarried. He is an avid walker. His hobbies include cricket and rugby ( as spectators and visitors), reading ( books on theology and history, biographies and thriller ), cinema and movies, as well as travel and travel literature.
