Stephen Leatherman

Stephen Parker Leatherman ( aka Dr. Beach, born November 6, 1947 in Charlotte, North Carolina) is an American geoscientist.

Life

1970 Stephen Leatherman gained a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Sciences at North Carolina State University. Six years later he earned his doctorate at the University of Virginia. Since 1997, Stephen Leatherman both director of the Institute for Coastal Research ( Laboratory of Costal Research ) and Director of the International Hurricane Center ( Director of the International Hurricane Research Center) at Florida International University, where he also worked as a full professor ( chair professor ) for environmental Research (Environmental studies ) is active. He has published numerous scientific articles on sediment dynamics of beaches.

Leatherman is considered the most famous beach expert in the USA. Since 1991 he publishes each year a list of America's Best Beaches with the most beautiful beaches in the United States. He rated the 650 best-known American beaches after fifty criteria, which, inter alia, the quality of the sand, the cleanliness of the water, the height of the waves as well as the visual aspects - such as a built-up or unspoilt surroundings or particularly beautiful vegetation - belong.

The coveted top spots on the list of " beach doctor " are almost always occupied by beaches in Hawaii and Florida. In order to provide variety in the first positions, may beaches that were once awarded as the most beautiful beach in the country in the next ten years do not take part in the competition. Several beaches in Hawaii and Florida are not found for the same reason on the current lists.
