Steve Brown (bass player)

Theodore " Steve" Brown ( born January 13, 1890 in New Orleans, † September 15, 1965 in Detroit ) was an American jazz musician (double bass, tuba). It is often classified as the best technical bassist of early jazz from New Orleans.

Steve Brown was the younger brother of the trombonist Tom Brown, with its Brown's Ragtime Band, he moved in 1915 to Chicago, in order to present jazz. In 1923 he became a member of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings; He also played with the Original Memphis Melody Boys and the Midway Dance Orchestra. From 1924 to 1927 he worked for Jean Gold Chain, where he began in 1924 the slap technique; short time he was employed by Paul Whiteman before he settled in Detroit, where he played mainly with local jazz groups. Between 1922 and 1950 he participated in 45 recording sessions, most recently with Frank Gillis ' Dixie Five.
