The Steyr Motors GmbH is a company specializing in the production of diesel engines Austrian company based in Steyr.
History
Steyr Motors was created by the removal from the Steyr -Daimler -Puch AG in 1990 as Steyr Motor GmbH, was still in possession of the Magna Group. Since 2001 Steyr Motors exists as an independent company following a management buyout.
The range includes in principle the family of the M1 monoblock motor, the base has been developed by the engine division of Steyr -Daimler -Puch. Steyr- motor M1 is mainly made with four or six cylinders, and finds its application in motor-boats, and military vehicles.
Steyr Motors was the first company to introduce hybrid technology for diesel engines in the marine environment and produced in series. 2008 Steyr Motors was able to present its first hybrid motor: the Steyr Hybrid Drive System ( HDS), developed in collaboration with the Dutch company Mastervolt. The cooperation Steyr Motors / Mastervolt is the leader in diesel-electric hybrid drive systems for sports and leisure boats.
Since 2009 M16 monoblock motors are in the United States by AM General Steyr built under license, the Helwan Diesel Engine Company is a licensee for Steyr 4 - and 6-cylinder monobloc engines in Egypt.
Since 2011, a partnership with the Lower Austrian company Austro Engine, which aims to jointly construct aircraft engines for propeller aircraft.
On 27 September 2012 the company announced that 100 % were taken over by the Chinese investor group Phoenix Tree HSC investment.
Products
The M1 engines are mono block turbo-diesel engines with high pressure injector. The 2-phase pump-nozzle injection system generates injection pressures up to 2200 bar. The Steyr M1 monoblock family consists of many different design solutions to enable an optimized tuned to the prevailing environmental conditions. The motors are robust and have an exceptionally good cooling ability. Due to its design as a monoblock they are compact and relatively lightweight ( less than 1.2 kg per hp rated power). You can with diesel ( F54, EN 590ff ), kerosene ( JP8/F34 ) or marine diesel oil to operate.
Marine applications in sports and leisure boats of the M1 family make from 60 to 70% of total sales. For example Steyr motors are used in the boats of the Dutch company Linssen Yachts. Also in motor lifeboats, as the Dutch FRSQ 700 ( M16, 230 hp ), and the Boomeranger - rigid inflatable boats, RIB as the C -680, which are used by the Finnish Coast Guard to find Steyr diesel engines. The same applies to the dinghies of the Rainbow Warrior III of Greenpeace, which are operated by a hybrid engine.
Various design solutions of the M1 engine can be found in buses, trucks, and especially in a variety of armored vehicles. They are, among other AM General HMMWV (M16, 135 kW), Panhards VBL (M14, 95 kW), Hagglunds Bandvagn 206S (M16, 145 kW), UROVESAs URO VAMTAC ( M16, M14 or 135 kW, 85 kW) and Force Protections Ocelot (M16, 160 kW)

The M14 is an inline four- cylinder 2.1 L displacement.

The M16 is an inline six- cylinder 3.2 L displacement.
Steyr HDS
Diesel - electric parallel hybrid. The system allows quiet and energy-saving, pure - electric drive of the boat in the harbor area and provides means of a boost mode at the same time the performance of both drives available.
