Stjepan Jovanović

Stephan Freiherr von Jovanović (Croatian Stjepan Jovanović barun ), ( born January 5, 1828 in Pazarište (near Gospic ), Croatia - Slavonia; † December 8, 1885 in Zadar / Zara Italian / ) was a Croatian nobleman and Lieutenant-General of the Imperial Army.

Life

Jovanović entered 1845 in the Habsburg ( Austro-Hungarian ) Army and fought in 1848-49 under Radetzky in Italy. In 1850 he was transferred to the General Staff and later adjutant of operating in the south of Dalmatia General Gabriel Baron of Rodich.

Between 1861 and 1865, Jovanović was as Consul General of Austria in Sarajevo. As a connoisseur of Bosnia, Montenegro, Herzegovina and the Krivošije he returned in 1865 as a colonel in the military service back. In 1866 he was able to excel in the war against Italy.

When the uprising broke out in Dalmatia, Jovanović received in 1869 in Kotor ( Cattaro ) the command of a mountain brigade and remained there after the insurgents had been prompted by negotiations for the cessation of hostilities.

In 1875 he was elevated to the status of baron and 1876 appointed field marshal lieutenant. In 1877 he took over in Split ( Spalato ) the command of the 18th Division troops. The following year, he led from the occupation of Herzegovina and subjugated the whole country within days and with almost no losses. There he was then employed as commander in chief and head of the administration. In 1882 he had to suppress the uprising in the Krivošije and was then governor of Dalmatia and military commander in Zadar.

For his services he received in the 170th graduation on May 2, 1879, the Knight's Cross of Maria Theresa Order.

Stephan Freiherr von Jovanović died on December 8, 1885 in Zadar.
