Stolberg Castle

Stolberg Castle is a castle in Stolberg (Harz) from the 13th century and stands on a sloping hill above three sides of the city. Since 2003 it is fully restored with funds from the German Foundation for Monument Protection and renovated.

History

Its oldest part, the round tower, dates from around 1200, the newer parts have been built in the style of the Renaissance 1539-1547. In the south-east wing, the classicist Large Reception Room and the Red Room are based on a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Its present appearance the castle through conversions 1690-1700. Expropriation until the 1945, the castle was owned by the Prince of Stolberg- Stolberg family.

From 1947, the castle was used as fdgb holiday home. For this purpose, executed renovations as well as numerous guests left extensive traces in fabric and appearance of the interior of the plant. In 1990 the castle became the property of the Trust and then stood empty. A private investor acquired it in 1993, there to open a hotel. Inadequate roof renovation work caused as a result of moisture and dry rot damage. After the hotel project in 1994 failed, Stolberg Castle was empty again, and was in danger of being lost. End of 2002, took over the German Foundation for Monument Protection after an agreement with the State of Saxony -Anhalt the building. The building fabric was notgesichert and gradually rehabilitated. 2008 Prince Wing opened its doors in 2009, the chapel was rededicated.

By 2008, approximately 12 million euro Federal funding, the State of Saxony -Anhalt, the European Union, the town of Stolberg and the German Foundation for Monument Protection have been used to repair the buildings. Since March 2008, the castle of the public must be accessible parts again and is used as a tourist center and " house guest ".
