Stomu Yamashta

Stomu Yamashta (Japanese山下 勉, Yamashita Tsutomu, born March 15, 1947 in Kyoto ) is a composer and musician from Japan, who plays drums and keyboards.

As a teenager, he was a drummer in the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra and studied at the Kyoto Academy of Music. From 1969 studies ( jazz drums ) at Boston Berkley School of Jazz in the United States. He then moved to London, where he founded the formation Come to the Edge. In 1973, he was the initiator of the group Eastwind. Yamashta played a compositions by Hans Werner Henze and Peter Maxwell Davies; at the same time he founded the group Red Buddha Theatre.

Known to a wider audience, the artist was identified by its GO project, in which he recorded in 1976 and 1977 three albums with other musicians of the directions rock and jazz. Contributors have included: Steve Winwood ( Hammond ), Klaus Schulze (keyboards ), Al di Meola (guitar), Pat Thrall (guitar ), Michael Shrieve (drums), Rosko Gee ( bass). The music thereby formed is a mix of rock, jazz, soul, world music, electronic music and New Age.
