Storgosia

Storgosia ( Bulgarian Сторгозия ) was a late ancient fort and an early Byzantine and medieval fortress and settlement, which had its origins in a Roman way-station. It is located today in Pleven in Northern Bulgaria - in Kajlaka Park ( Bulg Кайлъка ) and in the Kajlaka gorge. The original name of the city of Pleven was Storgosia. The present name was first mentioned in 1266 in Pleven documents.

In the 2nd and 1st millennium BC there were settlements in the area of Kajlaka parks from the Stone Age and Bronze Age. In the 1st millennium BC was here a Thracian settlement by the name Storgosia, which was then adopted by the Romans.

Later on a vexillation the Legio I Italica was the their main base in Novae ( Svishtov today ) had. The favorable economic conditions of the growing settlement exerted a pull on the population from the surrounding small villages.

The military camp in Storgosia grew gradually and was in late antiquity to the fortress - because of the invasions of the Goths and other barbarian tribes after 238 AD, who invaded many centuries and over again in the Balkan territories of the Roman Empire and the ethnic composition and the political situation of the region changed fundamentally. These ideas probably exerted an even greater pull on the surrounding population, the protection sought in the area of Storgosia, on the naturally protected area representing the Kajlaka Park today.

Beginning of the 4th century 31,000 m² were fortified and surrounded by a 2.20 m thick fortress wall - made of quarry stone and mortar.

During archaeological excavations were two goals, three defensive towers, residential buildings, a large basilica ( 45.2 x 22.2 m, three naves, three apses, a colonnade on the south side ) discovered from the 4th century and a public granary. Probably Storgosia lay in what is now the center of Pleven.

Under Emperor Justinian I the city was rebuilt in the 6th century.

The fortress existed until the end of the 6th century, the beginning of colonization by the Slavs, which lasted from the 6th century until the mid 7th century. Among the Slavs, the city was in Kajlika ( -? Kajlaka Park, Bulg Кайлъка? ) Renamed.

The city was built by the Slavs again and Kamenetz ( Kamenec; stem: stone) called. North of Kamenetz was another settlement, which was called Pleven ( root word: weeds - eg Czech: Plevel = weeds ). Both settlements united later.

North of it was a second settlement called Pleven (of plevel - Weed ). Later, united both settlements and were first mentioned in 1266 under Pleven documented when it was conquered by the Magyars.

The first mention of Pleven is from 1266, when the city was conquered by the Magyars.

From 1270, the name Pleven was used. Pleven was later for the Ottoman Empire was an important stronghold. However, the fortress of Pleven is not identical to the fortress Storgosia.

The archaeological finds of Storgosia - ceramics, weapons, coins - and in its necropolis testify to the fact that the fortified settlement has continued to exist until the end of the 6th century.

A district of Pleven is now called Storgosia ( жк Сторгозия ), also there is a hotel Storgosia.

After a " clean-up " in 1985, in which the vegetation have been removed - grass, shrubs, trees - nothing was further undertaken and the area degenerated again. The fortress was Storgosia with the support of EU funds reconstructed from the PHARE program for pre-accession of Bulgaria to the EU in 2005 ( about 38,600 euros ).
