Stradanus

Jan van der Straet (* 1523 in Bruges, † February 11, 1605 in Florence, Giovanni also Stradano or Stradanus ) was a native of Flanders, Mannerist painter and draftsman. His main creative period was in the 16th century in Florence, Italy.

Life

Jan van der Straet began his training in the workshop of his father and continuing later continued with Pieter Aertsen in Antwerp. 1545 he joined the influential Guild of St. Luke, the Dutch equivalent of the Roman Accademia di San Luca in. In 1550, he moved to Florence and entered the service of the Giorgio Vasari and the dukes of the Medici. He worked with Francesco Salviati in the design of the Belvedere near the Vatican. On his return to Florence, he devoted himself to the design of the Palazzo Vecchio and the Villa of Poggio a Caiano. For Studiolo di Francesco I he contributed two images in, including the painting Alchemist's Laboratory. When his most important student applies Antonio Tempesta.
