Strofades

The Strofades (Greek Στροφάδες (f. pl. ) ) Are two small rocky islands in the Ionian Sea. It is to the northerly, smaller island Arpyia ( Άρπυια 0.176 km ²) and Stamfani ( Σταμφάνη 1.18 km ²) or Megalo Strofadi ( Μεγάλο Στροφάδι ), which lies to the south. You are 45,5 km from Zakynthos 50.3 km from the Peloponnese and belong to the territory of the municipality of Zakynthos. The islands are both very flat and covered by dense vegetation. The highest point is only 20 meters above sea level. There are no sandy beaches on the two islands. The islands are known throughout Greece for its natural beauties. History

The islands have been inhabited for many years by monks, who appreciated fertility. They cultivated citrus fruits of all kinds on the Strofades. The Monastery of the Holy Mother of God comes from the year 1200 and can still be seen today on the islands. Since the islands are a popular stopover on the way to and from Africa for more than 1,200 species of birds, is being planned by the Greek government to set up a marine nature reserve here.

The islands are now part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, during the protected period, they may not be entered. This will be monitored and executed by the Coast Guard and the administration of the national parks.
