Stuart Cloete

Stuart Cloete ( born July 23, 1897 in Paris, † March 19, 1976 in Cape Town) was a South African writer. His work consists mainly of short stories, essays and short stories.

Life

The son of a Boer family was born in Paris. He grew up in England and was a soldier in the First World War. He volunteered with the Coldstream Guards, where he already gained the rank of lieutenant at age 17. Due to severe war injuries, he had to leave the service. After that, he lived as a farmer in the Transvaal. His first success as a writer he had the beginning of the 1930s. From 1935 Cloete lived back in England and later settled in the U.S.. A major part of his work and his historical novels dealing with the problems between the Boers and the native population. His first published novel Turning Wheels ( dt: Wandering cars) acting in the course of the Great Trek and was sold copies with more than 2 million a bestseller. Stuart Cloete died in March 1976 in Cape Town.
