Sturgeon Falls

Upper Goose Falls, Sturgeon River Provincial Park

The river has its source near the Lady Evelyn - Smoothwater Provinicial Park in Timiskaming District in Ontario. It flows in a southeasterly direction through Sudbury District and Nipissing District, before flowing into Lake Nipissing on the north shore. The administrative center of the municipality West Nipissing - Sturgeon Falls - situated on the river, about 3 km north of its mouth. Sections of the upper reaches are protected by the 33.5 km ² Sturgeon River Provincial Park.

History

The Hudson 's Bay Company 1848-1879 operating on the river the fur trading post Sturgeon River House. Until the mid-20th century, the river was used for wood rafts. The logs were transported to the sawmill on Lake Nipissing.

Hydropower plants

The Crystal Falls hydroelectric power plant is operated by Ontario Power Generation ( OPG). It was completed in 1921 and has a capacity of 8 MW. It is located 16 km north of Sturgeon Falls.

The Sturgeon Falls hydroelectric power station exists since 1902. It is operated by West Nipissing Power Generation. It has six Francis turbines with a total capacity of 7 MW.
