Sturla Þórðarson

Sturla Þórðarson (Latin Sturla Thordarson, * July 29, 1214, † 30 July 1284) was an Icelandic writer and skald.

Work

Sturla was the author of legal texts and prose literature in the form of some sagas and compilations, including the oldest version of the Landnámabóks, the Íslendinga saga and the saga Sturlunga. As a royal historian, he wrote treatises on Håkon IV ( Norway) ( 1204-1263 ) and his son Magnus ( 1238-1280 ). He also wrote poetry.

Life

He was a nephew of Snorri Sturluson. Like his uncle, Sturla was involved in the political debates of his time. Domestically, he fell into feuds among family clans, also with regard to the conflict of the Icelandic independence movement ( 1263 ) with the Iceland dominant at the time the Norwegian royal power under King Håkon IV (Norway ) and its successor Magnus VI. (Norway).
