The Untertürkheim station consists of two station parts: the passenger station in the network of the Stuttgart S -Bahn and a northern freight station. The abbreviation in the places of business set directory is TSU.

History

For Untertürkheim the railway age began on October 22, 1845 with the opening of the first railway line Württemberg. The first section of the Central railway connected the small wine-growing village with its nearly five kilometers away, an official city Cannstatt. Already on November 7, 1845, the line was extended to Obertürkheim.

The first station building had one floor and identical approximately with those in Cannstatt and Obertürkheim. Untertürkheim developed into a popular destination for day-trippers who used the new transport. From the near Stuttgart traveled to bathers and walkers. At the Güterverladestelle mostly agricultural products were shipped towards Stuttgart.

The Royal Württemberg railway administration planned from 1890 to relieve the Stuttgart Main Station. A bypass path should create a direct link between the Eastern Railway and the Northern Railway for freight trains. As a starting point for the new track and as a location for a new freight marshalling yard and the choice fell on the Untertürkheim station endpoint was the Kornwestheim train station. In the spring of 1894, construction began. The new goods and marshalling yard was built on the road Cannstatt ( since 1936 Augsburger Straße ) and 1896, passed in the presence of King William II, solemnly his determination.

The length of the track field was about 2300 meters and was, on average, 125 meters wide. Equipped he was with an administration and several service buildings, loading ramps for goods and military transports, five signal boxes for 162 points, a separate stop for the railroad workers and a roundhouse with four stalls, and a water tower.

On the passenger station was still present reception and administration building today. Consisting of two wings and a central hall. In the south wing building was until 1960 a post and telegraph office. In the north was the parcel and Expressgutannahme. For the railway officials a residential building was added.

Since May 1, 1897 is the Remsbahnkurve that allows a connection between the goods and the Rems Railway Station. The railway line to Kornwestheim is expanded to double track since September 23, 1904. After a few years of marshalling yard was already overloaded. The planning for the expansion began from 1906.

In order to relieve the Eastern Railway was 1900-1907 the construction of a left-bank Neckarbahn for debate. In the initial planning a branch to Untertürkheim was provided only on the height of cheeks. Last, it should be separated only in the freight yard Untertürkheim of the Eastern Railway. The project was never realized.

1911 failed due to lack of space, the project to expand the freight depot. Instead, the Railway Administration decided to build a new larger marshalling yard in Kornwestheim. Am Güterbahnhof Untertürkheim only the Nahgüterverkehr should be included in the future. Additional tracks to Cannstatt train yard were taken for this purpose, on 17 November 1912 in operation. On November 13, 1923, the connection was made to the newly created goods station in Gaisburg ( mid-1980s, decommissioned). Since 1958 also opens the railway line Stuttgart -Untertürkheim -Stuttgart harbor into the station.

Railway operation

The station is served by the S1 S-Bahn Stuttgart. For the S -Bahn operating the track 6 was built. Track 5 is assigned to the S-Bahn towards Bad Cannstatt, track 6 which direction Esslingen. On track 2 run single regional trains that connect " Schuster train" Kornwestheim and Untertürkheim about. The tracks 1, 3 and 4 are used by moving trains.

The Untertürkheim station corresponds, according to the Deutsche Bahn AG, the train station category 3

In the 1980s, the marshalling yard was declared a satellite of the Kornwestheimer marshalling yard and therefore lost its importance. It will be loaded no more goods. The numerous tracks serve as sidings for freight trains. On the already partially overgrown terrain, some rails are now dismantled. As part of the Stuttgart 21 project is to track the box for the new sidings Untertürkheim find a new use.
