Styrolution Group GmbH is a global supplier of styrenics, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main. The company is a joint venture between BASF ( 50%) and INEOS (50 %), in which major styrene business activities of the two partners have been merged. The company provides styrenics for a variety of everyday products from different industries, including automotive, electronics, construction, household, leisure, packaging and medicine and health. 2013 was the annual turnover of 5.8 billion euros, while EBITDA before special items came in at 442 million euros.

Styrolution offers several standard and special -styrene plastic types: styrene monomer (SM ), polystyrene (PS ), acrylonitrile -butadiene -styrene ( ABS), styrene-butadiene copolymer (SBC ), other styrene-based copolymers (SAN, AMSAN, ASA, MABS) and copolymer blends.

Styrene monomer (SM ) is a colorless liquid intermediate which polymerizes easily.

Polystyrene ( PS) is a thermoplastic material, which (for example as an inner lining of refrigerators ) is inter alia in disposable packaging, in the office and information technology and kitchen and large equipment use.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS ) is a thermoplastic material, which is used for colored parts, which must be heat-resistant and impact-resistant ( eg, vacuum cleaners and power tools ). Other applications are found in automotive, mobile phone housings and in the sports and leisure sector.

Styrene-butadiene copolymer (SBC ) is a transparent and impact-resistant thermoplastic. SBC is mostly used in food packaging and display.

Styrene -based copolymers (SAN, AMSAN, ASA, MABS) and copolymer blends (ABS / PA, ASA / PA, ASA / PC ) are thermoplastic resins mainly used in various technical applications, for example in automotive, garden equipment, tools, household, electrical - and communication devices as well as computers.

Company History

On November 30, 2010 BASF and INEOS signed a letter of intent to merge their essential styrene business activities. In April 2011, the U.S. competition authorities approved the establishment of the new joint venture without conditions. On 12 May 2011 styrenics successfully placed a bond of 480 million euros with a maturity in 2016. End of May 2011 signed BASF and INEOS a contract that governs the cooperation in the new styrenics joint venture. In early June 2011, the European Commission approved the establishment of the styrenics joint venture under the condition that the company an ABS production site in Tarragona, Spain sell. This production site represents less than 3 % of pro forma EBITDA before special items purchased from styrenics to the year 2010.

Styrolution is a joint venture between BASF and INEOS since October 2011. On October 1, 2011 styrenics made ​​her first appearance as an independent company in the market.

In February 2014, the company announced that its plant in Indian Orchard, United States, due to an oversupply of standard plastics to close, and to shift production to other locations. The polystyrene- work so far produced more than 100,000 tons.
