Attention

Styrene - acrylonitrile ( SAN abbreviation ) is a transparent and rigid plastic. This can be further processed by the addition of synthetic rubbers to acrylonitrile -butadiene-styrene ( ABS), and acrylic ester -styrene-acrylonitrile (ASA).

Properties

Styrene- acrylonitrile, is similar as a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile in the polystyrene structure and properties. A typical composition is 70% of styrene and 30% of Acrylnitrilanteilen. Available on the European market are products with 19 % -35 % acrylonitrile content and each with different molar masses. SAN has a higher strength, thermal and scratch resistance than polystyrene and is chemically resistant, for example to amines, in turn, are a common ingredient of plasticizers.

Styrene- acrylonitrile, can be screwed into the assembly only it is not suitable for the clips. SAN is largely dishwasher safe, but only partially UV-resistant. Most SAN types have food grade (BfR ). Due to the yellowish color of their own (not qualitätsbeeinträchtigend ) are different with blue / gray embellished shades available. There are also opaque colorations available in which the high modulus of elasticity of the product and the high scratch resistance particularly come into play. For particularly high rigidity even glass-reinforced grades are available.

The addition of polyvinyl carbazole (PVK ) to reach a higher heat resistance. However, plastics with PVC are toxic and therefore not approved for contact with food.

Since styrene - acrylonitrile is brittle, a butadiene rubber is used for applications where high impact resistance is required, added in the form of finely dispersed spheres. This material is acrylonitrile-butadiene- styrene (ABS)

Provider

The market for SAN is highly diversified. Large providers in Germany are:

  • Styrenics as Luran ®
  • Dow Chemical with Tyril ®
  • Polimeri - Kostil ®

Applications

  • Light guide
  • Glazing for industrial doors, sectional doors (eg Plustherm system glazing)
  • Optical body, for example, steering angle sensors in the automotive industry
  • Kitchenware ( salad bowl and cutlery, measuring cups, parts for kitchen appliances )
  • Shower walls
  • Reflectors
  • Battery cell containers
  • SAN is a raw material for the ABS compounding
  • AMSAN, a product made from alpha methyl styrene and acrylonitrile copolymer special Styrolution is also used to increase the heat resistance at ABS compounds
