History
The town was established on 1 January 2010 from the voluntary association of 18 of the 21 municipalities of the administrative community Southern Anhalt. It is the formerly independent communities Edderitz, Fraßdorf, Glauzig, Großbadegast, Hinsdorf, Libehna, Maas village, Meilendorf, Prosigk, Quellendorf, Radegast, Reupzig, Riesdorf, Scheuder, Trebbichau at the Fuhne, Weißandt- Gölzau, Wieskau and Zehbitz.
The merger took place against the background of the municipal reform in Saxony -Anhalt from the conversion of the administrative community in a unified community. Which also belongs to the administrative community Gröbzig Southern Anhalt City and the municipalities of Görzig and Piethen have the field change agreement to form the city of Southern Anhalt not signed, they were co-managed by the city of Southern Anhalt, however, until they were incorporated on September 1, 2010. Because of the de facto forced incorporation of the municipality Görzig from 1 September 2010 is currently (as of July 2011), a constitutional complaint proceedings pending.

Mayor
The election of the City Council and the mayor full-time for the city to be formed was held on November 29, 2009. In the mayoral election was Burkhard Bresch (The Left ) 50.4 % of the vote, Volker Richter ( CDU) 22.1%, Andreas Böhme (independent) 12.1%, Jens Haguenau (independent) 6.6%, on the other applicants accounted for 8.8%. This Burkhard Bresch was elected the first mayor of the new city.

The head of the city administration is in Weißandt- Gölzau. Other administrative departments of the city are available in the villages and Gröbzig Quellendorf.
