Sugarloaf Key Bat Tower

The Sugarloaf Key Bat Tower is a historic site in Monroe County, Florida. He is one mile northwest of U.S. Highway 1 or the Overseas Highway at MM 17 On 13 May 1982 he became a national monument in the USA.

History

The tower was built in 1929 by Richter Clyde Perky. The plans of the tower comes from Dr. Charles Campbell of Texas, an early pioneer of bat studies. The bat sleeping place should be a property for mosquito -consuming bats, which in turn einschleppten malaria. Of the original 14 built worldwide Campbell Bat Tower towers above, there exist two in the United States: The Perky Tower in Comfort and the Shangri- La Gardens in Orange, both in Texas. One of the towers was reconstructed so that today actually nesting bats there. A fourth Campbell Bat Tower in Temple Terrace, Florida, burned down in 1979 and is currently being rebuilt.
