Sukma

The district Sukma (Hindi: सुकमा जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. Administrative center is the place Sukma. By 2012, the area belonged to the Dantewada district. The district Sukma is mainly populated by adivasis.

Geography

The district is located in the extreme south Sukma Chhattisgarhs on the border with the neighboring states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Neighboring districts are Bijapur in the west, Dantewada in the northwest, Bastar in the North East (all Chhattisgarh ), Malkangiri ( Odisha ) in the east and Khammam ( Andhra Pradesh ) in the south.

History

The area of present-day district Sukma was during the British colonial period to the princely state of Bastar. After the Indian independence in 1947 of the former princely state of Bastar district of the Central Provinces, from which in 1956 the state of Madhya Pradesh has emerged. In 1998, the area of Sukma to Dantewada district newly founded. In 2000 it became a part of the state of Chhattisgarh, which was formed from the eastern part of Madhya Pradesh. As an independent district of Sukma district was dissolved in 2012 from the Dantewada district.

The district Sukma is one of the most affected by the insurgency of the Maoist rebels ( Naxalites ) affected districts. A large part of the district area is under the de facto control of the Maoists. In April 2010, the Naxalites ambushed near the village Tarmetla in the area of ​​today's Sukma district in one of the most violent attacks since the beginning of the uprising, a military convoy, killing 75 soldiers. In April 2012, the district head ( collector) of Sukma, Alex Paul Menon was abducted by Maoists and held 13 days in captivity.

Population

The district Sukma is sparsely populated. Based on the results of the 2001 census, the district has 249 841 inhabitants. This corresponds to a population density of 44 inhabitants per square kilometer. The majority of the inhabitants of the district of Dantewada is one of the indigenous population ( Adivasis ): Approximately 70.5 percent of the population are counted as members of the tribal population ( scheduled tribes ). The largest group are the Gond, a small minority are the Halba.
