Sulayman Reis (pirate)

Ivan Dirkie de Veenboer (* in Hoorn, † October 10, 1620 in Cartagena ) was a Dutch corsair of the 17th century. During the Eighty Years' War, he worked as a privateer, later he turned to piracy, and became an officer under Simon de Danser. After he converted to Islam in Algeria he called himself Süleyman Reis ( also Sulayman, Suleiman Slemen or rice) and began a highly successful career as an Ottoman captain and Barbaresk, who commanded the Algerian Korsarenflotte in his later years.
