The Sultan Qaboos University (Arabic: جامعة السلطان قابوس, DMG Ǧāmi ʿ at as- Sultan Qaboos, Sultan Qaboos University English ( SQU ) ) is a public university in Muscat, Oman.

History and Structure of the University

On the tenth Omani National Day ( calculated from the will to power of the Sultan 1970) expressed the Sultan of Oman Qaboos bin Said for the first time the intention of a university in Oman to set up. In 1982, construction began on the University and in 1986 took the first students begin their studies. Offered were first courses in the subjects of Education, Agriculture, Marine Science, Medicine Science and Health Science. In 1987, the subjects " Arts" and " Social Science " was added. In 1993 the establishment of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics. The University now has the following eight faculties:

  • Arts and Islamic Studies
  • Law
  • Economics and
  • Natural sciences.

Importance

The Sultan Qaboos University, was until 2000 the only university in the country. Today ( July 2011) to exist alongside five other private universities: University of Sohar, Nizwa University, Dhofar University, University of Buraimi and the German University of Technology in Oman. The SQU is the only state university in Oman, Sultan Qaboos although has announced the establishment of another state university.

Science and Research at SQU

In the first years after its foundation, the SQU focused on the training of future graduates. Only in 1999 was started with scientific research. 2001 additional research funds were allocated from the state budget and in 2003 began joint research projects with the United Arab Emirates University. 2010 flowed further research funding from the Omani The Research Council ( TRC).

The SQU has a total of nine specialized research facilities for hydrology, environmental sciences, telecommunications, energy industry with a focus on oil and gas, blue biotechnology, seismology, remote sensing and geographic information systems, Oman studies and humanities. Also, there are currently (2012 ) three research departments: one for Blue Biotechnology, a second for Carbon Research ( funded by the oil and gas company Royal Dutch Shell) and a third for the nanotechnology research with a focus on desalination ( funded by the TRC). 78% of all Omani Publications in refereed journals produced at the SQU. With an average of two articles per faculty member and one year is in the international arena in the middle.

At present ( 2012) are the SQU six scientific journals in the fields of medicine, engineering, oceanography and agricultural sciences, natural sciences, art history and social sciences and pedagogy out. The article in the medical and engineering journal were in the international SCOPUS database and the WHO Index Medicus for the Eastern Mediterranean Region. recorded.

The SQU organized various annual scientific conferences and support local researchers during visits of foreign scientific meetings.

Student numbers

In the academic year 2010/11 a total of 16,494 students were studying at the university. Of this study 15,104 ( = 91.6 %) in an undergraduate degree program and 1,390 ( = 8.4 %) in further studies. In addition, 491 students completed their studies with a Bachelor and 116 with a secondary degree (eg master ).
