Sulu Hornbill

The Suluhornvogel ( Anthracoceros montani ) is a rare species of bird in the family of the hornbills.

Description

The Suluhornvogel reached a size of 70 centimeters. The tail is white. The plumage, the beak, the naked skin of face and helmet are black. Back and wings are black with green shimmer. The iris is off-white in males and dark brown in females. The beak of the helmetless young birds has a bright top.

Dissemination

In the past, the Suluhornvogel occurred on the three islands Sanga Sanga -, Jolo and Tawi - Tawi in the Sulu Archipelago. Today, it is only detected on Tawi Tawi.

Habitat, lifestyle and food

The primary dipterocarp forests inhabited Suluhornvogel, preferably on mountain slopes. It feeds on berries and fruits and requires large trees for nesting.

Endangering

In the 19th century still often heard the Suluhornvogel now one of the rarest birds of the Philippines. 1999 only 40 specimens were counted. Main reasons for its rarity are the habitat destruction and hunting. The islands of Jolo and Sanga Sanga - are almost completely deforested and Tawi - Tawi to serve the Suluhornvögel as a target for the military. In addition, the young birds are killed for food procurement.
