Sune Almkvist

Sune Almkvist ( born February 4, 1886 in Uppsala, † 8 August 1975 ) was a Swedish bandy and football players. Following his active time he became a functionary in appearance. He is regarded as a pioneer in both sports in Sweden.

Career

Almkvist distinguished himself as a youth by his interest in the sport. The age of 15 he was one of the team that won the 1901 Bandywettbewerb to the first edition of the Nordic Games. About the Upsala hockey club he joined IFK Uppsala. There, on the one hand developed into one of the leading Bandyspieler Sweden and won with the team the club until 1920, eleven times the Swedish Championship. On the other hand, he was also in the field of football to the leading players in the first decade of the 20th century.

The first international match of the Swedish national football team on 12 July 1908 - a 11:3 victory over Norway - Almkvist had not yet been included in the team, but in the next game he was next to his team mate Hans Lindman and Theodore Malm, Oskar Bengtsson, Erik Bergström and Sven Olsson to the team that suffered a 1:6 defeat against the English selection. Finally, he belonged to the Swedish squad for the Olympic Games in the same year. In the 1:12 - opening loss - the worst defeat in the history of the Swedish national team - against the eventual champions, the English amateur team, he was also with as in the two internationals against the Netherlands and Belgium just after the exit from the tournament.

Also in the Swedish Bandynationalmannschaft missed Almkvist 1919, the first international match of the history of selection, however, came in 1920 each respectively in 1921 to an international match, in which he served as team captain. In 1925 he was one of the initiators of the Svenska Bandyförbundet, on whose board he was represented until 1950.

Main job was Almkvist doctor and got operated because of the sport the nickname " bandydoktorn ".
