Sune Jonsson

Olov Sune Jonsson ( born December 20, 1930 in Nyåker, community Nordmaling; † 30 January 2009) was a Swedish documentary photographer, filmmaker, and author.

Life

After his studies of folklore and literature in Stockholm and Uppsala Jonsson returned beginning of the 1960s back to northern Sweden. His debut book Byn med det blå huset ( The Village with the Blue House ) was first published in 1959 and describes the inhabitants of his birthplace Nyåker. As in his second photo book, Timotejvägen, the relationship between text and image plays an important role.

Between 1961 and 1995, Jonsson worked as a photographer and field ethnologist for the Västerbotten Museum in Umeå and devoted himself to long-term culture- photographic works mainly in the province of Västerbotten. Thematically, explained to the photographer with Swedish farmers, the cultural landscape created by man and church assemblies in Northern Sweden. His figurative work was inspired by internationally renowned photographers such as August Sander, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Wayne Miller and Edward Steichen's concept of The Family of Man exhibition from the year 1955. In addition to his photographic works Jonsson was also a documentary filmmaker, working in cooperation with the Museum of Västerbotten and the Swedish television to movies on small farms, mountain farmers and fishermen in the sparsely populated northern Sweden. Also, include two novels ( Brobyggarna station and Karl Albin E. Andersson minnen ) and a collection of short stories ( Hundhålet ) to his oeuvre.

Jonsson 2001 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Umea. In 1993 he was awarded the internationally renowned Hasselblad Award in Gothenburg. When opened in Stockholm in May 2006 Photo exhibition Sune Jonsson Jonsson meets Walker Evans photographs of the classic American documentary photography of the Farm Security Administration were compared.

In the fall of 2006, several photographs were from his debut book Byn med det huset blå at the photo exhibition in the Face of History - European Photographers in the 20th Century represented in London's Barbican Art Gallery.

Sune Jonsson last lived with his wife Stina in Umeå.
