Sunetra Gupta

Sunetra Gupta (born 1965 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India) is a professor of epidemiology and writer.

Life

Gupta moved the family as a child by various countries in Africa and Europe, before they went back to Calcutta. Her father was a friend of poetry and songs of Rabindranath Tagore. He often interpreted in the family circle and Sunetra was influenced artistically by this seal. Translated some of Tagore's songs and poems from Bengali into English.

Gupta studied biology and graduated in 1987 from Princeton University with a BA degree from. She received her PhD in 1992 at the University of London. It is now (2012 ) Professor of Theoretical Epidemiology at the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford and is part of the advisory board of the Princeton University Press in Europe.

Gupta's special scientific interest is the transmission of diseases to humans in malaria, AIDS, influenza and bacterial meningitis.
