Sunny Skylar

Sunny Skylar ( born October 11, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York City; † February 2nd 2009 in Las Vegas, actually Selig Shaftel ) was an American singer, composer, lyricist and music publisher.

Life and work

Sunny Skylar, born as the son of Russian immigrants in New York, began his career as a singer in the big band era in the orchestras of Ben Bernie, Paul Whiteman, Abe Lyman, and Vincent Lopez and stepped up in the 1950s regularly on smaller Club theaters in New York City and Las Vegas.

From the 1940s onwards, he worked increasingly as a composer and songwriter in the tradition of Tin Pan Alley and wrote over 300 songs, including the hits All the Time (1946 ), Gotta Be This or That (1946) and Hair of Gold, Eyes of Blue ( 1948). At times, Skylar also worked in film, such as for Carnival in Costa Rica ( 1947) with Dick Haymes. For Frank Sinatra Skylar wrote in 1947 It All Came True and You'll Always Be the One I Love. Skylar composition Do not Wait Too Long, Tony Bennett in 1963 introduced, 1965, Sinatra with Gordon Jenkins for his album September of My Years.

He often translated songs from the Spanish and Italian; had particular success in the 1940s, his English versions of Gabriel Ruiz ' Amor, Consuelo Velázquez ' Besame Mucho, Agustín Lara's Noche de Ronde ( Be Mine Tonight) and Ruggiero Leoncavallo's Mattinata (You're Breaking My Heart ), with the Vic Damone 1949 got to the top of the U.S. Billboard charts. In 1961 he translated the Mexican hit Cuando Caliente el Sol, with the Ray Charles Singers 1964 ( Love Me with All Your Heart ) landed a Millionenhit.

In the 1960s, Skylar lived temporarily in Brazil, since the 1970s, he was then a resident of Las Vegas.
