Supachai Panitchpakdi

Supachai Panitchpakdi ( Thai: ศุภ ชัย พา นิ ช ภั ก ดิ์, RTGS: Supphachai Phanitchaphak; * May 30, 1946 in Bangkok ) is a Thai economist and politician (Democratic Party). He was from 2002 to 2005 Director General of the World Trade Organization ( WTO). Since From 2005 to 2013 he was Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development ( UNCTAD)

Life

Training

Supachai received his education at St. Gabriel 's College and the Triam Udom School in Bangkok. He then studied at the Netherlands School of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam today, econometrics with a focus on development planning. He graduated with a master degree. In 1973 he obtained a doctorate in human resource planning and development. His doctoral advisor was the Nobel Prize winner in January Tinbergen.

Career

In 1974 he started for the Bank of Thailand, the Thai central bank to work. He worked in the research department, in the category of international finance and in the Department of Banking Supervision. In 1986 he was elected as a member of the Democratic Party in parliament. Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda appointed him Deputy Minister of Finance. In 1988, he left politics temporarily again and became a member of the Executive Board and later president of the Thai Military Bank.

In 1992 he returned to politics back, was appointed Senator and Deputy Prime Minister in the government of Chuan Leekpais. His field of was the economic and trade policy. In this position he represented Thailand at the signing of the Marrakesh Agreement of the Uruguay Round, the WTO called into life. He was also involved in the deepening of the Asian -Pacific Economic Cooperation ( APEC), the ASEAN and the Asia-Europe Meetings ( ASEM). 1995 to 1997 his party was in opposition. In the second Chuan government Leekpais he was again Deputy Prime Minister and also Minister of Commerce.

After the change of government in 2001, he was a visiting professor at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD ) in Lausanne. During this time he wrote several books on globalization and world trade. As the successor to Mike Moore in 2002 he was Director General of the WTO. In 2005 it took over from Pascal Lamy. Since 1 September 2005, the Office of the Secretary General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development ( UNCTAD) held. After the military coup in Thailand in September 2006, he was as a possible head of a civilian transitional government in conversation. However, he remained at UNCTAD. The ASEAN Supachai recorded in 2012 with the first major award of the Asia Cosmopolitan Awards. On September 1, 2013, was replaced as Secretary-General of UNCTAD Mukhisa Kituyi from Kenya.

Private

Supachai is married and has a son and a daughter.
